Caleb Serong running in Wednesday's light training session at Fremantle's hub on the Gold Coast

There are a handful of young Fremantle players ready to make the step up to the AFL, according to Justin Longmuir.

The biggest problem for the senior coach, is finding a way to fit them in the team that will face Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday.

“There are a lot of players to squeeze in (to the round two team),” Longmuir said.

“I’ve been super impressed with the way a lot of our younger players handled the shutdown.

“They didn’t look at it as an opportunity to just maintain fitness. It was an opportunity to get better.”

Longmuir didn’t name names, but he acknowledged that Freo’s group of untried talent, which includes Caleb Serong, Hayden Young, Tobe Watson and Luke Valente, could soon earn a call-up.

The group are all looking to join round one NAB AFL Rising Star nominee Sam Sturt as a debutant this season.

“I can name 10 or 15 players that have come back in significantly better shape and they’re going to put their hands up for selection,” Longmuir said.

“Whether they do it this week or in the coming weeks, they’re going to do it really soon.

“It’s good to have that pressure from underneath. I think it will really push us to the new standards and higher standards and it can only be a good thing for our footy club.”

Fremantle spent their first full day on the Gold Coast settling into their new surroundings at Royal Pines.

The workload will increase in Thursday’s main training session on a training oval adjacent to Metricon Stadium.

“It’s about readjusting to a routine that suits. Today was designed for them to settle in and get their bearings right,” Longmuir said.

“On Thursday, we’ll start ramping things up.”

Longmuir said he was supportive of the proposed ‘WA hub’ that is set to follow Fremantle’s four-plus week stay on the Gold Coast.

“(A WA hub) would be nice to get home and it would be nice to have some clarity on what’s going to happen post round five,” Longmuir said.

“If we have to stay here another week or two, (when we) get that clarity we can plan and put our players minds at ease.”
