‘Training Oval 2’ next to Metricon Stadium hosted Fremantle’s final main training session ahead of their return to football against Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday.

The session was highlighted by a short but intense match simulation. In the midfield, Sean Darcy, Nat Fyfe, Michael Walters and Darcy Tucker for White took on Lloyd Meek, Mundy, Connor Blakely and Caleb Serong for Orange.

After picking up a niggle in his right leg in the session, Blake Acres did not take part in the match simulation.

The simulation included more stoppages than normal with the coaches occasionally pausing play to run a number of scenarios and both Darcy and Meek had their moments in a close ruck battle.

Up front, Matt Taberner showed his contested marking skills with two contested grabs leading to successive goals for the White team.

Brandon Matera, who has returned to the Fremantle lineup to take on Brisbane, was also active and crummed a nice goal from a tight angle.

Sam Sturt continued to build his match fitness after recovering from a minor back injury. Even though he wasn't selected to face Brisbane, he wasn’t far off his best with an impressive run down tackle to lock up defender Ethan Hughes.

Nathan Wilson impressed down back for the White team, showing he was ready to make his return to the Freo lineup.

While Hill warmed up separate from the main group, he took part in the match simulation at half back.

There were also promising signs from Jesse Hogan and Cam McCarthy, who played the full minutes in the match simulation.

Fremantle leader David Mundy said it was an important hitout for the team after their arrival on the Gold Coast on Tuesday.

“It was a good session, it was our first one in earnest up on the Gold Coast,” Mundy said.

“It was good to get the cobwebs out. I think the boys trained really well and there was a really intense match sim at the end there.”

The 316-game veteran was excited to line-up alongside Freo’s younger midfielders.

“We have a really healthy midfield so we’re going to have a few numbers going through there,” Mundy said.

“It’s good to get a different mix and get some chemistry on some other guys.

“I’m really eager to get back into it, obviously missing round one and watching from the lounge room, it wasn’t a whole lot of fun and something I’m not really used to so I’ll be raring to go.”
