Des Headland is raring to go for the start of the 2010 season following his first injury-free pre-season in recent years.
The talented forward has spent more time off his feet this time around, adding extra swimming and bike riding to his program.
“I got through it all and I did all the main training sessions,” he said. “I’m just ready to play the intra-club next week.
“I feel good, probably the best I’ve felt in a long time,” he said. “I just can’t wait to give it a crack.”
Headland signaled a more permanent move to the forward line was on the cards this season.
“I will definitely be down forward a bit more than I usually am,” he said. “And I'll probably be playing a bit deeper this year, too.
“I’m looking forward to the role.”
Headland should have no problems in attack considering he successfully played as a regular half-forward for the Brisbane Lions in the 2002 Premiership win.
“I’ve played there a fair bit so I know how to do it,” he said.
Headland is confident Fremantle will have a potent attack with captain Matthew Pavlich set to return to a more familiar position closer to the big sticks.
“It will be good to get him (Pavlich) down there full-time again,” Headland said.
“He’s a great forward - he can play anywhere on the field - but to have him down in the forward line is going to make a great presence.
“Defenders will be more focused on him so hopefully I can sneak away and get a couple of goals here or there.
“The likes of Michael Johnson will play forward and we get Chris Mayne back and Hayden Ballantyne, too, so hopefully we can do alright down there.”
Fremantle will have its first serious hit-out with an intra-club match at Subiaco this weekend before opening its NAB Cup campaign against Melbourne on Sunday 21 February.
Bouncedown for the intra-club match is at 6pm on Saturday 13 February, with free entry via gate 8 and parking available at Kitchener Park.
