The midfield battle will be crucial when Fremantle take on Gold Coast on Saturday

Fremantle’s midfielders will need to respect the Gold Coast engine room as a collective and not focus on individuals when they go head to head on Saturday at Metricon Stadium, according to senior coach Justin Longmuir.

Young-gun midfielder Matthew Rowell has made all the headlines from the Suns’ past two wins against West Coast and Adelaide with consecutive best on ground performances.

While Longmuir acknowledged the impressive abilities of the 18-year-old, he added that the entire Suns' midfield would be a challenge.

“We need to look at (Rowell) he’s had a fantastic start to his footy career,” Longmuir said.

“Not just the inside work, but he’s also getting a lot of footy on the outside and the left foot goals he kicked last week were first class.

“We need to make sure we’re not getting carried away with the hype of Matt Rowell. Their midfield group as collective, with some senior bodies in there, are really going to work.

“They’re doing it as a collective so we need to make sure we prepare for the midfield as a group and get the job done as a collective, as much as trying to limit individuals.”

Longmuir was open to bringing in a young midfielder of his own, with no.8 pick Caleb Serong in the mix for the clash.

The team will be announced on Thursday afternoon and Longmuir said both Serong and Connor Blakely could come into the midfield.

“I can say is that Caleb and Connor will be in the mix, they’ll definitely be in the squad and they’re both putting a lot of pressure on players in the team at the moment with their training performances and their efforts against Brisbane reserves a couple of weeks ago,” Longmuir said.

“It’s good to have that pressure of selection, it keeps players in the team honest and hungry.”

Longmuir praised the 19-year-old Serong as a tough inside midfielder.

“There’s not much not to like about him (Serong). He’s so clean, competitive and tough,” Longmuir said.

“He’s just a competitive animal and he’s got a real thirst for contact and it’s probably something we’ve been missing a little bit, just those bigger harder bodies that love to bash and crash.

“He’s worked on all aspects of his game since he’s been at the club but his strengths are his effort around the ball. That’s been really shining through at training and in the games he’s played.”
