McPhee, who revived his 2010 season with a string of tagging jobs, said coach Mark Harvey had allocated a Lions midfielder for him to run with in the side's season opener.
The 28-year-old played significant defensive roles on stoppage specialists Lenny Hayes and Chris Judd last year and shapes as a likely opponent for damaging young Lion Daniel Rich on Saturday night.
"I haven't ever ran with a player at Brisbane, I've played mainly forward and defence," McPhee said from Fremantle Oval on Wednesday.
"I'm not really familiar with anyone in particular, but I look forward to the challenge if it is a good quality player.
"The majority, I'll be playing in [the midfield], but with the rotations and having the sub player now, there'll be times when I'll be needed to play elsewhere."
McPhee, who returned to his original club last season after a seven-year stretch with Essendon, said he was feeling as fit as he ever has and there would be no excuses for under-performing.
But while the utility's pre-season has been uninterrupted, key Fremantle players have been hit with injuries, with young defender Alex Silvagni the latest casualty with a stomach infection.
"As it is at the moment, he's in hospital getting treatment and hopefully he'll be out soon," McPhee said. "We'd love to have him in our side, he adds a lot of versatility."
Fremantle will be aiming to win at the Gabba for just the second time in its history on Saturday night after last year's breakthrough win in round seven.
McPhee said after a summer of turmoil off the field, the Lions would be keen to make a statement to the football world.
"They're a proud club and they have been successful previously," he said.
"There's no doubt that they'll be coming out hard. That'll be a challenge that we'll have to hit head-on."
McPhee and star midfielder Stephen Hill launched a season-long fundraising campaign on Wednesday to aid the Asthma Foundation WA.
Ten West Australian companies have pledged $2 each for every tackle laid by Fremantle players during the 2011 season to help those suffering from asthma.
McPhee, the club's leading tackler in 2010 with 107, said the players would be aiming to raise as much money as possible, with tackling a key part of the side's game plan.
"We've got a great offensive game when we're gong really well, but what sets up that is your defensive pressure and your tackling," he said.
"If we're able to defend well and tackle well, then I think we've got enough firepower on the end of that to be able to score."
