It will be the first time the club has visited the Kimberley Region following successful camps in Bunbury in 2003, Geraldton in 2004, the Pilbara Region in 2005, the Peel Region in 2006, the Wheatbelt Region in 2007 and the Great Southern Region in 2008.
The annual Community Camps are a great way for the club to visit regional areas of Western Australia to meet members, supporters and football fans of all ages and provides a unique opportunity for those in regional areas to get up close with Fremantle players as they finalise preparations for the coming season.
The camp also provides the chance for grassroots participants of Australian Rules football, including players, umpires, coaches and administrators, to learn from the best by getting a rare insight into what is needed to compete at the highest level.
Fremantle’s travelling party to the region will include Club Captain Matthew Pavlich and Senior Coach Mark Harvey, who will be joined by a mix of senior players and some of the new recruits.
The group will spend their scheduled time in Broome and surrounding regional communities spreading the AFL message and Fremantle’s “purple passion.”
Following their morning arrival in Broome on Wednesday 4 February, the travelling party will head out to local schools to address students on the rigours of playing AFL.
The best opportunity to meet the players and see them in action will be at the new sporting field at the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre (BRAC) on Thursday 5 February from 5:00pm onwards.
The players will conduct a NAB Auskick Superclinic for children aged five to 12 years before taking to the training track with some local players from the West Kimberley region who have been invited to participate in the session.
However, all of this action and activity will not outshine the official turning on of the lights around Broome’s new sporting field at the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre, which will be a memorable moment for locals as they are turned on for the first time as the sun goes down.
During Fremantle’s three day community camp they will also be visiting schools in Derby, Beagle Bay, One Arm Point, Djaridjin/Lombadina and Bidyadanga.
In addition, there will be a Sportsman’s Night conducted at the Broome Bowling Club on Wednesday 4 February from 7pm. Tickets to the Sportsman’s Night can be purchased by calling 0414 876 041 or at the Broome Sports House and are selling quickly.
