Des's Diary: Day Three
Seeing the kids’ enthusiasm for football has been the highlight of the camp
IT WAS a solid training session last night in Broome, but we all pulled up good this morning. It's been a relaxing few days, but all the boys had a good training session down at the local oval and didn't let up.
This morning the boys were split between the remote communities of Derby, Beagle Bay, One Arm Point, Djaridjin/Lombadina and Bidyadanga. Jay van Berlo and myself went down to Bidyadanga – a community about two hours south of Broome – and it was possibly the highlight of the three days – a great spot.
I chucked the iPod in to relax and before you know we were there and the kids were going nuts.
They were excited to see us and it was a real good time. We went to the beach down the road to have a dip and it was a really good spot with turquoise water and great fishing.
It's obviously a remote community and a fair drive to get down there, so I'm sure all the kids were excited to see us.
We pushed the same messages to those kids when we visited – stay in school, get a good education and live a healthy lifestyle. We just really pushed those ideas forward as well as telling the kids to avoid drugs and alcohol.
We spoke to five-year-olds all the way to 16-year-olds. They were all responsive, listened to what we had to say and they had some good questions of their own.
When we got back in to Broome we had a kick around with the kids at the local PCYC, played a little bit of basketball and just had a bit of fun.
It was nice to have a more low-key session and just mingle in with what they were doing.
We're resting up Friday night, our last in Broome, and gearing up to get back to Perth so we can get stuck into the business of playing footy. It's been a great three days.
