Hill's hard work paying off
Fremantle youngster's focus on the tough stuff reaping rewards
Hill was taken by Fremantle with the No. 3 selection in last year's NAB AFL Draft, and despite his light frame, has been able to play every game. Hill was again superb with 22 possessions in Sunday's big win over Port Adelaide, and was particularly damaging in the first quarter, when the home side raced to an unassailable 30-point lead.
While his outside work was typically impressive, Hill recorded the second-most hard ball gets by any Fremantle player on Sunday. Everyone had seen his pace and brilliant left boot when he was drafted, but winning the hard ball has been a big focus of his debut season.
"I've been working on winning the hard ball, because it hasn’t really been a strength of mine. I try not to think too much and just go for the ball, and want to get it," Hill said.
"I was probably more of an outside player coming through the juniors, so I've been working on it a lot lately with ground balls at training with the coaches' holding the bag. I hit them and work on getting in low.
"I've found that as soon as I do it, I want to keep doing it and get in hard. It always looks good when you do your review and see that. I've also been working on being able to play more than one position and being an inside and outside player."
Hill believes playing every game this season has contributed to his improvement, and doesn’t feel like he needs a rest with three games remaining in the season.
"I still feel good and I'm usually a good runner, so I can get through it," he said.
"I'm happy to keep playing and would love to, but if I get told to rest, that would be alright too."
Hill was modest about his own performance on Sunday, but was delighted to be part of the 42-point win and to see Chris Mayne and Des Headland combining for seven goals up forward.
"I thought I had a pretty OK game, and I was happy with it. I just want to do the team things, get the hard ball and do plenty of one-percenters," he said.
"It was a really good team performance; everyone contributed and it was good to have such a good win. It was good to have them (Mayne and Headland) back, and they and worked well together."
Hill feels Fremantle has built some momentum with two wins and a reasonable performance against the Western Bulldogs in Melbourne over the last three weeks, but knows the team needs to lift against Melbourne at the MCG next Sunday.
"We are getting better by playing together and are developing really well," he said.
"It will be good to get a win away because we haven’t won too many. We are looking to play how we did here and hopefully get another win. It's good to have all the young players in the team together, but we just play the same each week and keep going about it the way we are."
