Match Review by Les Everitt as featured in the Fremantle Football Club Inaugural Yearbook

“Respect was the key word in post-match discussions after Fremantle’s first AFL Premiership match.

After a solid start Fremantle had slipped to four goals behind by three quarter time. However the new comers displayed great spirit to kick five goals in the last quarter to do down by just one straight kick.

It was a day for records with great interest shown in some of the early touches by Fremantle – Ben Allan had the first possession, Dale Kickett had the first kick, Matthew Burton took the first mark and Todd Ridley scored the first goal. Peter Bell scored goals with his first two AFL kicks.

The performance of Burton in the ruck was one of the most pleasing aspects of the game. A disappointment was the injury to Jamie Merillo. Merillo was a surprise early in the game, adjusting quickly to the AFL tempo to be a clear winner before sustaining a broken jaw.

Adding further significance to Fremantle’s first game was the fact that ten players were making their debut.”

Coach’s Comment – Gerard Neesham
“I told them to go out and enjoy themselves and have faith in their own ability. Winning respect is one thing. Anyone who plays sport likes to come off the field and be respected. One game doesn’t make that happen.”
