Fremantle player Jason Carter has been served with a club-imposed sanction after being charged with a drink-driving offence.

The 20-year-old, who has played two senior games for Fremantle after being drafted as a category B rookie in 2018, was stopped by police in Spearwood about 1am on Sunday.

Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick said it was the second time in five months that Carter had not lived up to the club’s values and expectations.
In April this year, Fremantle fined Carter after a video posted on social media showed he had not adhered to health advice regarding 1.5m social distancing requirements at a gathering in the home he shares with his partner.

“Jason put the lives of other road users and himself at risk by getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol,” Garlick said

“As a club, we believe it is important to hold this type of behaviour to account.

“Therefore, the club has determined that Jason will be suspended for five games, be required to step away from the club during that time and also undertake an alcohol counselling and education program.

“Jason is a young man who has clearly made a poor decision but can learn from this experience.

“The club will continue to work with Jason and his management to ensure he is provided with the appropriate amount of guidance and support during this time.”

The AFL was made aware of the details of the incident as soon as possible and conducted an investigation, which determined that, in relation to the AFL’s Covid-19 protocols, there was no sanction applicable to the club or player.
