When Michael Frederick was drafted by Fremantle at no.61 in the 2019 NAB AFL National Draft, he never pictured himself running out alongside Freo legend David Mundy.

The reason being, Frederick thought the veteran had already retired.

Now in his second season at Fremantle, Frederick is continually being wowed by the achievements of the 35-year-old.

“He is unreal really…when I first got drafted to the club I forgot that he was there, I thought he had retired!” Frederick told Fremantle’s Final Siren podcast.

“Dave sees the game so well and he is so experienced that he gives you confidence when he is anywhere near the footy and that showed in the last quarter.

“I was very confident he was going to either win or halve every contest that he was going at, he just gets better and better every game.”

In Sunday’s win against Hawthorn, Frederick admitted that he was feeling the pressure after the Hawks came back from being 34-points down at quarter time to 13 points at half time.

“I was getting a bit nervous at half time but Justin’s chat to the boys at half time really calmed us down,” Frederick said.

“He told us to be composed and when we have time with the footy to really take our full seven seconds after a mark and give all the boys a rest.

“(We knew) it would be an arm wrestle throughout the whole game, so we tried not to play too quick.

“He just wanted as many repeat stoppages as we could and to try and halve every contest that we could.”

Frederick was full of praise for forward Travis Colyer, who was instrumental in Fremantle re-gaining the ascendency with a two-goal second half.

“Trav’ is really good for me, he is vocal out on the field and so instructive,” Frederick said.

“He is really good at calming the nerves down a bit when the ball is going up and down, he keeps you in role and shape for the team and he was really good today.”
