It’s not often that you can give up six goals to your direct opponent and still be among your team’s best, but that accurately describes Griffin Logue’s efforts against Sydney star Lance Franklin in Fremantle’s two-point win on Saturday night at Optus Stadium.

Franklin won the battle with six goals, but Logue helped Freo win the war with a game-high 13 intercepts as well as 11 contested possessions, seven marks and six one-percenters.

Logue could be seen as unlucky to see Franklin awarded two goals from marginal free kicks, but Franklin’s other goals were nothing short of stunning, with three coming on the run outside 50.

“It was a good battle. There were a couple of stiff calls but I got away with a few as well,” Logue said.

“As long as we got the win, (if we lost) it would have felt a lot worse. I’ll look to improve from there.

“It was a great battle and he’s a great player.”

Logue said he was pleased to be able to hold his own when left one-on-one with Franklin.

“I think I had a couple 50/50s. I was happy to get a bit of body work into him and not let him run and launch. He can slot them anywhere on the field from 60 metres, so you can’t give him a second chance,” Logue said.

“I just had a crack and made sure I stuck to my strengths and try to beat him and use strong body work against him.”

In his post-match media conference, senior coach Justin Longmuir said he was impressed with aspects of Logue's game.

"I loved the parts where Griff got him. Griff had 13 possession gains, and he was playing on one of the best forwards of the generation," Longmuir said.

"I think early on he gave him a little too much space to hit up on him, and he relied on his speed to close him down those marks which I think he adjusted to, then he lost some critical contests especially in the last quarter where Buddy made him pay.

"It was a great tussle. We were thinking about changing the match up but for Griff’s development it was great to play on him and he was winning enough big moments himself. It was a great match up and a key part of the game."

Logue said he couldn’t be prouder of his backline, praising the depth of Freo’s defence.

“With someone like Luke Ryan back in the side, (he brings) experience and builds the trust that we have,” Logue said.

“Myself and Brennan Cox, we can work on the same page and always work well together.

“Add in the other boys, Tobe Watson, James Aish, Tucks (Darcy Tucker) and Wils (Nathan Wilson), they’re all good blokes and we have so much depth coming through and a few boys missing out in Taylin Duman and Reece Conca.

“It’s one of those things that some people miss out…it’s just really fun playing with them all.”

As soon as the team song was sung post-game, Logue immediately went to young key forward Josh Treacy to congratulate him for kicking his first AFL goal, coming at a crucial point in the final term.

“The first snag is always a big thing and to kick it at the time he did to put us in front. It was a nice snag and he’s a great fella and really deserved it as well,” Logue said.

“(He’s building confidence) it’s what you need as a young key forward. He’s still 18 years old, you look at the size of him and what he can do on the field.

“It’s just going to build each week with a few more games under his belt, he’s going to turn into a beast. It’s really good to see.”
