FREMANTLE coach Mark Harvey says it is too early to label his side a finals contender, despite continuing an undefeated start to the season with a thrilling win over reigning premier Geelong on Sunday night.

Led by captain Mathew Pavlich, who Harvey said played one of the great leader's games, Fremantle dragged back a 21-point deficit to win by seven points at Subiaco Oval.

It is the club’s first ever 3-0 start to a season, but Harvey said wins over Adelaide, Essendon and now Geelong were not enough to start talking about finals.

“You won’t hear me talking about it, nor the players,” the coach said after the game. “It’s only round three and we’ve managed to acquit ourselves well so far, (but) you cannot judge right now.

“I’m being realistic.

“We’ve been working to a plan the last couple of years and it’s starting to come to the forefront of what we’re doing

“The most pleasing thing at the moment is we appear to be running out games better than who we’re playing.”

Pavlich finished with 26 possessions - 16 of which were contested - and five goals in a match-winning performance.

“No matter where we had to play him, he just changed the trend of the game at times,” Harvey said.

“Particularly when we had to find something when we were behind, he brought it upon himself.

“From a leadership, captain’s point of view, it was one of the great games.”

Harvey also praised second-year midfielder Stephen Hill (23 possessions and two goals) and Anthony Morabito (two goals), while elevated rookie Alex Silvagni was singled out for his defensive job on Tom Hawkins.

“You look at how your players handle pressure and I think we’re dealing with that a lot better as a group,” Harvey said.

“I think we’re putting a lot more pressure on the opposition for longer periods.

“As a coaching group we tend to put a lot more self-belief into areas of the ground.”

Harvey said Chris Tarrant, who was a late withdrawal with an ankle injury, was keen to face Geelong and should be back in the side to face St Kilda at Etihad Stadium next week.

Second-year midfielder Nick Suban will have scans on Monday to determine the extent of an ankle injury sustained in the final minutes.
