“It sort of just came about, it just happened I guess,” Chapman told Fox Footy.

“JL (Justin Longmuir) just said go back to basics, and to back in the pre-season we had and execute the basics and we’ll run over the top of them, which we did, just.

“It was pretty hot and under the pump, but we stood up and got the job done.”

Alongside the seven-gamer in Chapman, the highly contested match provided an opportunity for Fremantle’s younger players to show what they can do under pressure.

Experienced midfielder and stand-in captain for the clash David Mundy believes the first match of the 2022 season was a great experience for the team.

“It was a pretty unorthodox way to win I guess, in general we really fell away from what we were trying to do in the second half, but it was a great contest,” Mundy told Fox Footy.

“We have a lot of hope with our next generation coming through, we want them to take over and really drive the Club forward and it’s good because they can.

“They’re really dedicated in doing that.

“I think you find that the teams that fall in [to finals] are the ones that win more of these games than lose those really tight ones.

“It’s a great experience for our group.”
