A scrappy day turned into a statement last quarter
For three quarters, Peel Thunder’s performance against Swan Districts never really clicked into top gear, with the game a grind for the majority of the day until Peel were able to kick away in the last, piling on 7.2 to the Swans’ single behind.
The last-quarter surge came as the group connected and knuckled down into their roles, pulling away from the Swans when it mattered most.
It was a reminder that even on an off day, this side has the ability to change the game in a burst.
Toby Whan’s rising influence
One of the biggest positives was the continued growth of Toby as an inside midfielder. His work rate and impact around the ball stood out clearly on game day.
His development continues to impress. Spending more time as an inside mid on the day, Whan finished as the leading ball-winner on the ground with 31 disposals, eight clearances, eight score involvements and a goal.
On a day where the game never fully opened up until late, Toby’s ability to win it at the coalface and drive it forward was a key pillar in setting up Peel’s final-quarter burst.
Sean Darcy’s contest dominance
In the ruck and at ground level, Sean Darcy put together a dominant performance that underpinned Peel’s control around stoppages. The numbers tell the story.
Darcy was strong all day, gathering 27 disposals, 41 hitouts, 11 clearances and 10 score involvements, capping off a big weekend.
His work wasn’t just aerial; his follow-up at ground level was a great building block for the big man. Almost half of his touches were groundball gets, with many of them heavily contested as well.
Darcy’s presence ensured Peel generated repeated opportunities, laying the platform for the late onslaught.
