How would you sum that up?
It was pretty special. To do what we did tonight it takes a lot of belief, a lot of maturity and it takes a fair bit of guts really. We’ve been working on our mental skills for three years since I got here and it’s for moments like this where you feel like you’re done but you stick to the task and you try and claw your way back into it. I’m so proud of the players.

What sort of belief can that buy a group with potentially three games left?
Hopefully a lot. It’s already there because you don’t come back from 40-points down I think it was, without belief already there. So they’ve got a lot of belief in our footy. Clearly we need to start better but the belief is there.

What did you put that start down to?
We didn’t handle the contest well. We fumbled. Their pressure was a lot better than ours but I thought the way we used the ball invited their pressure. We tried to handball over, and once we started to drive our legs and take the game on and force them to actually stick good tackles the game opened up for us. We were just way too safe in the contest, fumbly and they burnt us on turnover. Like I said we stuck to it, fixed a few things up and ground our way back into it.

What did Jye Amiss’ performance tonight show about his character?
It shows that his method is right and I don’t know if I've ever seen a young player come in and work so meticulously on their goal kicking. He never wastes a shot at training, he has a really strong routine and he has a lot of belief in his goal kicking so he wouldn’t have been dented by his first shot at all.

How difficult was it weighing up that decision to play him?
It wasn’t that big of a decision to be honest. We thought we needed another marking target, we thought we needed a taller forward who leads at the foot really well against the Bulldogs, and he was the one. Whether we thought he was ready fitness wise, he blew the GPS up last week at Peel which gave us good confidence in his fitness and he did his job tonight, he was really good.

You’ve shown so much faith in all the young players, do you think that’s paying off now?
I think it is paying off. They’ve earned their positions and they’ve earned their opportunities to play in positions that impact the game and they’ve benefited from being given the opportunity but they’ve also benefitted from the hard work they’ve done. Caleb (Serong) and Andy (Brayshaw) to do what they did tonight is a reflection of how hard they work on their craft, how hard they work on their fitness and how determined they are as footballers to be their best selves. To be able to have games like they did on the big stage is credit to their own work ethics.

How did you approach half time because the desperation after that point seemed to go to another level?
Half time was reasonably easy because the tide had turned in my eyes. I thought our whole second quarter was better than the first, even they they kicked the first (goal) I thought we created opportunities and once we started getting the game played in our front half and bringing the pressure, the scoreboard started to turn and we had already kicked four goals in a row by half time. So at half time the belief was strong, so the players turned it around, not the coach.

One of those desperate moments was from Michael Fredericks in the fourth quarter, how significant did you think that was?
I thought all our small forwards were desperate and that’s probably what got us back in the game. I thought 'Sonny' was desperate all night and hit the scoreboard and gets pats on the back for the scoreboard but some of the contests he gave, the relentless pressure he put on, and Freddy was the same and so was Lachie Schultz, they were all desperate.

Can you quantify what 59,000 fans in purple can do for you?
No not really. It’s a lot quieter in the coaches box but I’m sure our players got some benefit out of the crowd tonight and I’m sure it has an impact on the opposition when the crowd is that one sided and a team's coming. It gives us something but it also takes a little bit away from the opposition. So they got us over the line.

How do you approach the huge challenge next week at the MCG?
Same as we have embraced every away trip this year. We’ve won I think seven games and had a draw on the road. We feel like we are a good travelling team. It’s going to be a big challenge and one we are ready for. We’ve won our only game at the MCG this year so our players should go with a lot of confidence.

ALL THE HIGHLIGHTS

Do you think the large Collingwood crowd will have an impact on the team?
Hopefully not. We’ve got 23 players with finals experience now so they should be able to handle it. It's going to be a different challenge, the Magpie Army will be out in full force and strongly behind their team but it’s another great experience for our players.

Is Nat Fyfe any chance to return next week?
Not next week no.

Will Matt Taberner play next week?
'Tabs' has to play tomorrow in the WAFL and we will see how he goes. Jye’s performance was great and we couldn’t probably have asked for much more out of him so we will work on that during the week, I won’t touch on selection now. Jye played well so I’m not sure his spot is up for grabs.

What about Nathan O’Driscoll’s ability to step up and kick that goal. For such a young player, it's not a fluke, what do you put that down to?
I’m not sure, he’s got a knack for the knowing where the goals are. The thing I loved about it was he committed to the shot early, he showed really good composure to settle himself and to knock it over was great. And you’re right it’s not a fluke, he’s done it plenty of times for us nearly in every game he’s played.

Is that the sort of thing that lifts the team?
It was an important time in the game. There’s something about ‘Driz’ he does lift those around him, probably not for the goals, his team mates love playing with him because he is an effort player. There’s not a contest or a rep in his role where he just doesn’t give his all and it’s good to see him get rewarded.

What was that injury where he limped from the ground and came back?
I think it was a standard ankle, I’m not taking anything away from him but he was moving really well and functionally really good after he came back on, so he’s a tough country boy and he knows how to grind it out.

What’s the balance between celebrating the win and shifting the focus to next week?
We’ll go through the same routine as we have all year. We’ve got to celebrate the wins – especially a win like that. You’ve got to celebrate it. So we will let the boys enjoy it, come in on Monday, reset and look to go again.

You normally give them a day off tomorrow but given it is finals and you want to seize momentum do you get them in?
I think humans, and AFL players in particular, love routine so I don’t think we need to change anything because we had a good finals win. We will give them tomorrow off, there’s some pretty tired boys who will need to do a lot of recovery tomorrow. You will probably see a lot of them down at Peel cheering on the Peel boys and we will get in on Monday, review it and move on.

Fremantle will play Collingwood in a semi-final on Saturday 10 September, 7.25pm EST at the MCG. The Club will send members their unique codes via email on Sunday 4 September to purchase finals tickets within the member priority period, which will be Monday 5 September between 10am-2pm
