Fremantle are looking at adding depth in the areas affected by departing players, according to Head of Player Personnel David Walls.

Freo head into the NAB AFL Draft holding picks 30, 43, 44 and 65, 70 and 77 with Freo likely to use four selections.

With the departures of rucks Lloyd Meek and Rory Lobb, as well as versatile tall Griffin Logue, Fremantle are hoping to bring in players in those roles with their two picks in the 40s.

Walls said Fremantle would target the best available player at no.30.

"It's a bit different for us this year without any first round picks. We have some great talent in our list and it was great to bring Luke Jackson in in the trade period," Walls told SEN WA.

"The first pick will be the highest on our list, the later picks there might be a little more list management strategy to make sure we get the right combination and a few different types to complement our list."

Walls said Fremantle are happy with their ruck and defensive depth at the top end, but are looking to the future by targeting depth.

"Pick 30 will be the best player and then after that we'll try and address the needs," Walls said.

"We need a developing ruck and a key defender will be nice as well. We had great years from Brennan Cox, Alex Pearce last year, who got through injury free, and we look forward to seeing Joel Hamling this year, but we need a younger defender we can try and develop.

"We'll do what we can and that was part of the reason for the trade last week with North Melbourne."

Walls expects Hamling to feature strongly in Fremantle's 2023 campaign, but added Fremantle have other players who can play tall down back if needed.

"Joel played a fair bit of footy in the WAFL last year. He's really motivated to have a big pre-season and I know the strength and conditioning guys have great faith they can get him ready to go," Walls said.

"I have no doubt we'll see Joel playing AFL for us, it's just when the opportunity comes.

"The backline held up really well last year, and there are other options like Luke Ryan who was All Australian as a full back. Ethan Hughes can play taller, Heath Chapman is 193cm, but Joel is critical to play on those 205cm key forwards that we see these days."
