Fremantle's ability to stay focused and stick to the game plan despite facing adversity in the 23-point victory against Brisbane was the most pleasing aspect of the round one clash for senior coach Justin Longmuir.

Fremantle conceded the first four goals of the game before responding with eight consecutive goals of their own, eventuating in the win against last year's grand finalists.

“I thought we drew on everything we’d been working on over preseason, to be honest,” Longmuir said at the post-match press conference.

“I thought most impressively, we played for each other.

“There is some stuff we would like to handle better in that phase (when Brisbane started to fight back late), but I think our contest work really allowed us to create opportunities back the other way and clearly kicking a couple in a row filled us with confidence."

Longmuir said despite being three men down during the fourth quarter, the team was able to stay united and see out a courageous win.

“It takes a little bit of the gloss off a really good win to have three guys get injured like that, but it creates opportunities, and we’ll have players ready to go,” Longmuir said.

“Seats in the boat are not always full, there are going to be opportunities for players along the journey and some players are going to get opportunities next week.”

Caleb Serong was a standout performer with his Club record-breaking 46 disposal game, with Longmuir saying the 23-year-old was unselfish with the way he focused on a team-first mentality.

“Caleb knows it’s not all about possessions, but it’s a nice little box to tick along the way (breaking the Club disposal record),” Longmuir said post-match.

“In the first half, he had in the high 20 possessions but when he started getting tagged, he automatically flipped to how can I help the team win clearances and own the game, and not how he could get the ball.

“That just shows great maturity."

The 46 disposals from Serong breaks the previous 44 Club disposal record held by David Mundy (2016) and Peter Bell (2001).

Fremantle will now have a quick six-day turnaround heading into their round two game against North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium next Saturday.
