The Fremantle Football Club is proud to announce the addition of two new international partner clubs, the Bayonne Dockers from France and the Shanghai Dockers of China.
This exciting development showcases the Club's commitment to growing the Fremantle brand and fostering community connections across borders.
In a groundbreaking move, the Fremantle signed a memorandum of understanding with the Bayonne Australian Rules Football Club, now known as the Bayonne Dockers. This partnership marks the first of its kind in France, linking two port cities with rich sporting traditions.
Founded in 2017, the Bayonne Dockers have quickly established themselves in the French AFL Championship. The club has attracted a diverse group of players, many of whom are French nationals new to the sport. The athleticism and inclusivity of AFL footy has been key factors in drawing talent from this rugby-loving region.
The Shanghai Dockers, founded in 2023, have breathed new life into Australian Rules Football in Shanghai. Under the leadership of Club President Daniel Mummery and Club Manager Gigi Guan, the club has grown rapidly, introducing both locals and expats to the excitement of the game.
Starting with non-contact mixed-gender AFLX games, the Shanghai Dockers have quickly progressed to full-contact play. Their dedication paid off when they clinched the national championship at the AFL China Cup in Foshan in May 2024.
Both partner clubs have experienced significant benefits from their affiliation with the Fremantle Football Club:
The partnerships have raised the profile of Fremantle and AFL football in both France and China, attracting new players and fans.
Access to professional uniforms and equipment has been particularly valuable for the Shanghai Dockers, where such items are difficult to obtain.
Both Clubs have been active in their local communities, with the Shanghai Dockers hosting team Auskick clinics for children.
Both international clubs have hit the ground running, showcasing their enthusiasm and growth through vibrant social media presence. Their proactive approach to digital engagement has helped spread awareness of the sport, Fremantle, and build a sense of community among fans and players alike.
As the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season approaches, these international partnerships stand as a testament to Fremantle’s commitment to expanding their reach and fostering global connections.
The Club looks forward to supporting the growth and success of both the Bayonne Dockers and Shanghai Dockers in the years to come.
