As illustrious as Michael Walters’ career was from an individual point of view, one thing is certain: the 34-year-old’s football journey has been about much more than just the game itself.
In his Thursday afternoon media conference, Walters made sure to thank a long list of individuals who impacted his football journey - none more so than his family and friends, who have been there every step of the way during his 17-year career.
“My family has played a big part in my entire footy career,” Walters said.
“Without you all being there to support me through all the ups and downs - we celebrated, we cried - you made me the person I am.
“Football is football, but it’s the things within football that change a person, that help you out in life. Having different personalities around you each and every day, you take different things and different traits that you learn from them.
“Firstly, starting with my mum, dad, and brother - I still remember waking up for junior footy and my mum had packed my gear and was ready to go with a warm bowl of porridge.
“My dad, who was my first idol, gave me my passion for footy and has given me feedback on all my games, right up to my last one this year.
“I slept with a footy, I carried it everywhere with me, and my dad was one of my biggest role models.
“I’ve always looked up to my brother - he has always taken care of me and has always been in my corner throughout my entire life. And my wife, Marnie, has ridden the bumps with me.

“We talk about purpose in life and football, and she gave me a purpose, along with my kids as well.
“I didn't get that final game in, but at the end of the day, it doesn't dictate what, for myself personally, I’ve been able to do.”
Addressing the playing group earlier in the day, Walters made it clear that the connection to his teammates - on and off the field - is something he’ll cherish for a lifetime.
“It’s been a hard year for me personally,” Walters said.

“But you guys made it so much easier. I’m going to miss the coffee yarns, just hanging out, and the FaceTime calls.
“I’ve been around the game a long time, and I’m going to miss that the most - hanging out with you guys each and every day.”
The small forward was named an All-Australian in 2019, when he kicked 40 goals for the season and was responsible for two moments etched in Fremantle lore.
In Round 10, he kicked an after-the-siren point to beat Brisbane in Perth, and a week later, he kicked a goal with 30 seconds remaining to down Collingwood by four points at the MCG.
Walters retires with the second-most goals (365) and seventh-most games (239) in Fremantle history.
