Fremantle defender Luke Ryan says the 49,460-strong crowd played a special role in getting the team over the line in the red-hot, finals-like thriller against the Hawks.
“The crowd was unbelievable tonight,” Ryan said.
“They were so loud, it felt like there were 80 thousand people there. They helped get us over the line.”
Down by 13 points going into the final term, the troops rallied, coming out of the blocks hard to hold the Hawks goalless for the last quarter while adding four majors of their own. They converted six of 18 defensive half chains into inside 50s for a return of 3.1 (19) in the final quarter.
“I think once we kicked a goal or two, the crowd got loud, and then that ‘Wharfie Time’ came on - it gave me goosebumps.
"Shout out to the crowd, it was unbelievable.”
One of the highlights of the night was the return of Sam Switkowski, who was electric around the ground with multiple pressure acts, three goals, and 16 disposals.
“We win when we play a team game, and everyone buys in. The pressure was unbelievable,” Ryan said.
“Our trademark efforts were outstanding, and they’re the things that get us over the line. Everyone tipped in tonight.
“He’s (Switkowski) an old man - he’s got an old man’s body - and he acts like an old man around the club,” Ryan laughed.
“But he’s a smart player. He’s our leader down there, and when he brings that heat, that’s the main thing. Then there’s his leadership around the ground - and getting a lick of the ice cream, kicking three goals. That’s why we love playing with him.”
The win places Fremantle inside the top eight, with a blockbuster fixture against Collingwood next Sunday at the MCG - something Ryan is looking forward to.
“We’ll review this game Monday,” Ryan said.
“We’re going to have to bring our best game - they’re an unbelievable side.
"This is where you want to be playing finals at the ‘G against the best team in the competition.
"We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
