Fremantle midfielder Murphy Reid says learning a new role has been no easy task since joining the Dockers, having primarily played as a midfielder in his junior years.
Reid currently has 19 goals, 17 goal assists, and 106 score involvements from his first 19 senior games. With just one more goal and three more assists in the final four games of the home-and-away season, Reid will become the first Docker to record 20 goals, 20 assists, and 100 score involvements since Matthew Pavlich’s All-Australian year in 2015.
Reid credited the support he’s received since arriving at Fremantle for his success.
“I didn’t play forward much before my time here at Freo,” Reid said at his Tuesday media conference.
“Just being able to adapt (to the forward line), I’ve had a lot of people in my corner who have made my time a lot easier, helping me play as a forward and work on my craft.
“There’s a lot that goes into it, it’s quite different from playing midfield.
“A lot of the roles, shape, and positioning are very different.
“There’s a lot involved. We’ve got a fair few roles, so learning them, learning the names of the roles, and probably just the positioning, shape, and the work rate required, going up and back.
Although the 19-year-old has hit the ground running as a forward for Freo, his natural craft as a midfielder hasn’t been put on the back shelf. The Rising Star nominee continues to work with head coach Justin Longmuir, midfield coach Joel Corey, and fellow onballers to build on his midfield game.
“The coach (Justin Longmuir) is actually really big on me doing vision with the mids and stuff like that, and getting a few centre bounce reps after training,” Reid said.
“I’m going to see ‘Smithy’ (Joel Corey), the mids coach, and just keeping that going in the background, because that’s obviously a bigger picture thing.
“He’s (Longmuir) always good to have a chat, I get on really well with him.
“He’s been good for me. He’s shown me some little things here and there. Sometimes, if he wants to show me a clip of Caleb (Serong) or Andy (Brayshaw) to highlight what I could do in that situation, or what I might do differently, he’ll show me.
“It’s mostly working with the forwards for the time being, but hopefully in the future, you might see me go through there.”
19 years old today.
