Fremantle midfielder Hayden Young has spoken about his recent injury setback.
Speaking on 96FM on Thursday morning, Young told hosts Clairsy and Lisa that his most recent injury is disappointing, but he’s confident he’ll return better than ever.
“I’ve never done a groin adductor before, so I didn’t quite know what it was or if it was something minor,” Young said.
“I just wasn’t able to get going (after the incident), which is a little bit frustrating.
“I knew it wasn’t too bad - because I suppose I could sort of jog off the field - but yeah, we just didn’t want to risk it any further.
“Ras (Neil Erasmus) was ready to go as the sub, and he came on and had a great impact.
“Scans have shown there is a little bit of damage there, but not too much. I’ve been able to get moving the last few days and hopefully I can get back pretty soon.”
Young has endured an interrupted 2025 season, playing in only seven games after dealing with hamstring issues earlier in the year and now his most recent groin injury.
He had played in 22 or more games in each of his previous three consecutive seasons heading into 2025.
The 24-year-old believes a lack of continuity during pre-season is the likely cause of his injury troubles.
“It’s hard to draw correlations, but I think everything big picture is all linked,” Young said.
“The reality is when you don’t have a full pre-season and you don’t have continuity in your body, you’re at a higher risk of injury, and I’m well aware of that.
“That’s something I’ve got to manage going forward, when I go back out on the field, obviously I don’t have the amount of work in my body that the rest of the boys do.
“I’ve got to prepare really well to prevent these things from happening.
“At the end of the day, I’m at a bit of a higher risk of injury, and I’m aware of that.
“There’s no little fix or something I can do in the next two weeks to bulletproof my body, but I’ve got to prepare the best I can, have faith in the medical staff, and hope that my body holds up.”
Fremantle senior coach Justin Longmuir said in his weekly press conference on Wednesday that he remains confident Young should be able to return before the end of the home and away season.
