Retiring Club Legend Nat Fyfe revealed how conversations with fellow Club Great Michael Walters influenced his decision to play on in 2025.
Despite pushing his body to the limit at the end of 2024, Walters provided some words of encouragement to Fyfe, which saw him give it one more crack.
“At the end of last year, I didn’t feel like I was in a position to go on. I couldn’t see myself in our best team, and I was looking to retire then but really, it was on the back of Sonny (Michael Walters) encouraging me not to give up, to keep going that little bit further, that I find myself still in this position today," Fyfe said
“Sonny and my journey became really close towards the end, because we had both been there in the losing Grand Final in 2013.
“We used each other a lot as sounding boards over the last couple of years, dealing with injuries, the change of coach, the culture, and how our positions as leaders in the group evolved and changed.
Fyfe elaborated on his 2024 retirement dilemma in his exclusive interview with Ryan Daniels following his teammate's retirement address on Monday.
“I felt like in the last couple of rounds last season, I was letting go of my career. I didn’t feel like I was playing at the level I wanted to, and I felt like that could have been the end,” Fyfe told Daniels.
“Everything logically said it was the right time at the end of last year. I couldn’t get in the team, I had no more stones to turn over to try and improve. That was all the rational, gut thinking, but my heart just said if there’s still a chance, you never give up. Keep going.
“Now we sit in a position that I’ve dreamed of for 16 years.”
Reflecting on Walters’ lap of honour following his retirement in Round 18, Fyfe revealed how that moment would be one he would cherish.
“Sharing that moment with Sonny when he called time on his career was special, because I knew this was going to be my last year,” Fyfe said to the Club.
“His body didn’t allow him to get to the very end, but I wouldn’t be in this position if he hadn’t encouraged me just to walk a little further.”
Fyfe and Walters played alongside one another in 164 matches over the course of their 16 and 17-year tenures on Fremantle’s playing list.
