Here are three things we saw from Peel Thunder’s Round 2 loss to Claremont.
Good role recognition
A number of Fremantle-listed players - Oscar McDonald, Brandon Walker, Ollie Murphy, Cooper Simpson, Josh Draper and Jaren Carr - had strong, role-driven performances.
McDonald was solid down back, showing his experience as a seasoned performer, maintaining a consistent level across the backline for his younger teammates.
Simpson continues to provide bounce off the back half, using the ball well while developing the contested side of his game.
Murphy was one of seven defenders who featured at league level and was impressive in holding his own in the contest.
Walker provided dash off half-back and was strong in contests, delivering a solid performance in the loss.
Carr featured on the wing and had some nice aerial moments, providing a contest and bringing the ball to ground on multiple occasions.
Standout performances
Hugh Davies and Jeremy Sharp delivered standout performances, highlighting the quality and experience they’ve gained at AFL level.
Davies was a key part of the defensive unit, playing above the level with strength in contests and reliability throughout.
Sharp split his time between inside mid and wing, leading the team in possessions, score involvements and goals for the Thunder.
Bailey Banfield, the ultimate team man
Bailey Banfield showed his team-first mentality, travelling to South Australia as the emergency for Fremantle’s Gather Round clash with Collingwood, before flying home in time for Peel’s game on Saturday 11 April, where he delivered another typically reliable performance.
Unfortunately, as announced by the club on Tuesday, Banfield suffered a knock late in that game and has entered concussion protocols.
He will be unavailable for any level of football this weekend.
