Fremantle senior coach Justin Longmuir has touched on who’s in line for Thursday afternoon’s team selection.
Speaking at his Thursday morning media conference, Longmuir said the selection of a number of players would hinge on today’s main training session.
Midfielder Matthew Johnson (hamstring awareness) and defender Brennan Cox (knee) both came from the field in last weekend’s win over Brisbane, but Longmuir said the pair are both in the running to play in Bunbury.
“I’m confident both of them will be right to play,” Longmuir said.
“They’ve got to get through training today.
“I think Johnno I’m probably more confident with, to be honest.
“Coxy is an interesting one, and with the bye next week, is it an opportunity to give him a couple of weeks off to try and get that knee right?
“We’ll see how he feels after training and make a call then.”
Longmuir was also confident midfielder Hayden Young would make his return following three rounds on the sidelines with concussion.
“He still has one final box to tick, so he’ll get through training, and then he’s got to pull up well from training,” Longmuir said.
“I’ve got a feeling his mindset shifted this week as well.
“He’s a lot more confident and it feels like he’s through the worst of it.
“So he’s got to finish off the concussion protocols, but I’m confident.”
After a successful return via the WAFL on restricted minutes last weekend, Longmuir confirmed ruckman Sean Darcy pulled up well and would again continue his build with Peel Thunder.
“He’ll increase his minutes this week,” Longmuir said.
“He got through well last week, pulled up really well physically.
“I thought his form was excellent, given it was his first game in a while.
“We just need to build his minutes and keep building his form and fitness.”
Longmuir confirmed midfielder Jaeger O’Meara would continue his build back to fitness and form in the WAFL after his recent return from facial fractures.
“He’s obviously going to play an important role for us,” Longmuir said.
“I think the luxury we have at the moment is making sure we get JOM right after a nasty incident - then six weeks out - to be able to build his form and fitness and confidence a little bit slower, when we’re not having to rush him back, is a good space to be in.
“It’s a little bit like Sean. Sean’s a quality AFL player, but we’ve got the luxury at the moment with our depth, and where we see it, to be able to build their form and make sure that when they come into the team they’re ready.
Fremantle’s team selection for Saturday’s clash with the Roos at Hands Oval will be released at 4.20pm WST today at fremantlefc.com.au.
