The board, players and staff of the Fremantle Football Club express their sadness at the passing of former AFL commissioner Terry O’Connor.

O’Connor, who helped establish the WA Football Commission and was a former chairman of West Coast, passed away at the weekend.

A University of WA law graduate, O’Connor was appointed a QC in 1987 and was chairman of the WA Anti-Corruption Commission and Chancellor of Notre Dame University from 1990 to 2005.

O’Connor was also, in his time, regarded as the heart of the University Football Club, where he not only played more than 250 games but at various times served as president, secretary, captain and coach.

“Terry will long be remembered for his contribution to the law and academia,” Fremantle President Dale Alcock said.

“Terry also leaves behind a proud football history as a player, coach and administrator, in particular at the elite level with his outstanding contribution to both the AFL and WAFL.

“On behalf of the board, players and staff of the Fremantle Football Club, we extend our deepest sympathies to Annabel, Simon and Dimity.”
