Pitt gets his chance
Jayden Pitt will make his AFL debut against the Brisbane Lions
Coach Mark Harvey confirmed that Pitt, the No.20 selection at the 2010 NAB AFL Draft, will make a surprise debut after impressing with his composure and maturity in late pre-season matches.
The slightly built 18-year-old was expected to develop his 70kg frame before pushing for selection, but Harvey said the highly skilled midfielder was equipped for AFL football.
"Young players always need to develop, but if they display maturity and composure then you certainly induct them into your team when you think it's right," Harvey said on Thursday morning.
"He's got good poise and balance. He's played two games now, not full games, and he's displayed an ability to be composed at this level, therefore he's got a game.
"We have liked what we've seen on the training track, but you've got to see that in action and he hasn't looked out of place at all.
"A lot of his ball use has been across the half-back line at the moment; we haven't seen a hell of a lot in the midfield at this particular stage and that can be a different story."
Lower, who has earned his second AFL chance after playing 20 matches for Port Adelaide, has impressed in the midfield this pre-season and Harvey said the 23-year-old would add a physical edge to the side.
"He's obviously learnt from his first opportunity of playing AFL, and sometimes players come back better because of that," the coach said.
"We'd like to think that Nick will add to our midfield and our physical strength. We've seen him over a number of practice games and we've liked what we’ve seen."
An extensive injury list has presented round-one opportunities at Fremantle, with Alex Silvagni the latest casualty with a stomach infection.
The club had experimented with the young defender as a back-up ruckman this pre-season, with Michael Johnson now likely to fill that role at the Gabba.
The Lions have few injury concerns, with defender Josh Drummond (quad) the only major worry. Harvey said he was aware his side was meeting this week's opponents at their peak.
"They've had an uninterrupted pre-season from an injury point of view so it's a tough challenge; it always is when you go over there," he said.
"Momentum's a lot of things and I couldn't think of anything better than to win on the road in your first game."
In announcing Decmil Australia as a diamond-level partner on Thursday morning, Fremantle completed its sponsorships for the 2011 season.
Chief executive Steve Rosich said the club would push towards $7.5m in total sponsorship revenue this year - a likely sponsorship record that would place it among the top four to five clubs in the AFL.
Rosich said the club was on track to sign more than 40,000 members by May.
