Freo's first-year players put hands up
Cameron Sutcliffe is a chance of making his debut on Sunday, joining other first-year Freo players such as Lachie Neale
FREMANTLE midfielder Lachie Neale believes the club has more young players ready to put pressure on for senior selection, with Cameron Sutcliffe in contention to make his debut this Sunday.
Sutcliffe, who was recruited with pick No.71 in the 2011 NAB AFL draft, is named on an extended interchange bench alongside Neale for Fremantle's clash against the Western Bulldogs at Patersons Stadium.
The tall midfielder from SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens would be the fourth first-year player to debut for Fremantle this season, joining Hayden Crozier, Lee Spurr and Neale.
"Cam's in really good form coming off a 30-plus-possession game on the weekend, so he'd have to be close," Neale said on Thursday.
"And Tom (Sheridan) has been really consistent this year and deserves a chance later in the year or in the coming weeks."
Fremantle recalled key midfielder Stephen Hill (ankle) for Sunday's match, but full-back Zac Dawson has not recovered from a knee injury.
Key defender Antoni Grover could play his first game this season after being named on the field, replacing Alex Silvagni, who has been omitted along with ruckman Zac Clarke and young midfielder Jayden Pitt.
Skilful small forward Michael Walters has been named on an extended interchange bench, capping his return from a club suspension after he failed to meet fitness benchmarks earlier in the year.
Forward Kepler Bradley and running defenders Paul Duffield, Nick Suban and Dylan Roberton are also on the extended bench, which will be cut by three on Friday afternoon.
Neale was substituted out of Fremantle's loss to Collingwood at the MCG last Saturday with an ankle complaint, but he trained strongly this week and said he was fit to play.
The 19-year-old has played 10 games in his debut season and said he was working hard to improve the defensive side of his game.
"The body is feeling really good and obviously we had the bye a couple of weeks ago, so that was a good freshen up both physically and mentally," he said.
"To say that I'm tired would be a fairly lame excuse. I'm feeling really fresh and looking forward to the back half of the year."
Fremantle's first-year players were on hand on Thursday to recognise 11 young West Australians at the 18th annual Bravery Awards, hosted by Fremantle in conjunction with the South Metropolitan Area Health Service.
The club's newest recruits presented the young patients' stories of courage and Neale said the afternoon had been "eye opening".
"Being in the world of football where everything is bright and happy around the club, this is definitely a day where we're brought back to reality," he said. "It's very inspiring."
