After a head-turning round one victory against North Melbourne, senior coach Ross Lyon said it was critical that Fremantle quickly moved on to their next opponent, the Gold Coast Suns at Metricon Stadium on Sunday.

Lyon said that it was important to win for their fans, but internally, the club wasn’t getting carried away with the convincing 82-point victory.

“We feel we have a big challenge going to Gold Coast now,” Lyon said.

“There’s been a lot of noise about (the win) but it’s never as good and it’s never as bad. We certainly like to think we’re not falling into the bouquets being thrown around.

“We’d like to win for our members, our corporate partners, our families and ourselves as we put in a lot of hard work.

“The prize will be the same once the ball is bounced on the weekend on the Gold Coast. We haven’t travelled as well for the past few years but when you’re a mentally strong team, you respond to the challenge.

“We’re using no excuses, so we understand that we’re in for a tough game.”

Lyon said Gold Coast would be hungry to bounce back from a heartbreaking one-point loss against St Kilda in round one, with Lyon crediting the Suns for their effort throughout the game.

“Gold Coast went to the end against St Kilda, they went to the last minute, the last second,” Lyon said.

“We felt that even when we were well on top on the scoreboard, we kept giving supreme effort and that’s what we really like.

“There were mistakes early and late but at no stage did our effort wane.

“The team got it done on the weekend, not one player. Everyone talks about tactics and strategies getting it done but it was about the team dynamic and effort that got it done on the weekend.”
