A part of Fremantle's 2021 Indigenous Jumper design painted onto canvas by local artist Kevin Bynder. It will later be transferred into a jumper design format.

The creation of Fremantle’s 2021 Indigenous jumper is underway with former Fremantle Docker Des Headland and AFLW player Mikayla Morrison playing a role in the concept, artwork and design.

The pair are working alongside local artist Kevin Bynder, who also designed the Perth Scorchers’ Indigenous uniform for the past two BBL seasons.

Bynder has painted elements of the initial design on canvas, which will now be transferred into a jumper design format.

The jumper design process has been a family affair with Headland the uncle of Morrison and cousin of Bynder.

It is the first time an AFLW player has played a role in designing the club’s AFL jumper, with teammate Jasmin Stewart designing Fremantle’s AFLW jumper that was worn in 2020 and 2021.

Similar to Fremantle’s AFLW jumper, tapping sticks will feature as the central design feature to form the chevrons.

The back of the jumper will feature a map of Rottnest Island, an acknowledgement to the more than 370 Aboriginal men who died and were buried there in a mass grave, now called the Wadjemup Burial Ground, after being prisoned and enslaved on the island between 1838 and 1931.

The design will also feature references to Headland’s playing days as well as the family background of both Headland and Morrison.

The jumper will be unveiled in the lead up to Fremantle’s Sir Dough Nicholls Round game.

At the club’s 2021 AFL Season Launch on Thursday at Crown Perth, Club president Dale Alcock revelaed that Headland and Morrison would work on the design.

"As we look ahead to our reconciliation activity for 2021. I’m excited to announce the artists for our 2021 Sir Doug Nicholls Round jumper design,” Alcock said.

"We’ve struck something pretty special this year with our AFL Women’s player Mikayla Morrison sharing creative responsibility with her uncle, and former Freo star Des Headland.

"Des and Mikayla, along with Des’ cousin Kevin Bynder, have already got the preliminary artworks underway.  We can’t wait to share the final design with everyone in the in the lead up to National Reconciliation Week in May."
