Defender Heath Chapman has been flagged as a potential debutant when Fremantle take on GWS on Sunday at Optus Stadium.

In his weekly media appearance on Seven News, senior coach Justin Longmuir said Chapman had impressed in Peel’s WAFL pre-season games. He was also hopeful ruckman Sean Darcy could return from a knee injury to take on the Giants.

“Sean is a really good chance. We gave him the extra week and gave him a really good hit out at training when we got back,” Longmuir told Seven News.

“Chappy (Chapman) has put two solid appearances in at Peel and is not far off. We will throw his name up at match committee and see where it lands.”

Longmuir gave a frank assessment of Fremantle’s round one loss to Melbourne.

“It was really disappointing. We were off in a lot of factors,” Longmuir said.

“Probably the most disappointing thing was our skill level. We weren’t able to make the most of our momentum especially early and we were always on the back foot. We have a little bit to work on this week.”

Longmuir said Fremantle would continue to find a balance with captain Nat Fyfe rotating through the midfield and forward line.

“A lot of things are on the table and we want him to be where he can influence the match most,” Longmuir said.

“When he goes forward he is able to take the opposition’s best defender as well.

“That was the same on the weekend which gives other players one-on-one looks.

“We will keep throwing them around but we want him to impact the game as best he can.”
