In his 17th AFL season, David Mundy is still putting up career-best calibre performances as he continues to amaze fans, teammates and his senior coach Justin Longmuir.

The 35-year-old was arguably best on ground in his 334th career game as he dominated in the midfield with 35-disposals in Fremantle’s 31-point win against GWS at Optus Stadium on Saturday.

With captain Nat Fyfe starting the game forward and then coming off in the third quarter due to concussion, Mundy was delighted with how Freo’s younger mids Andrew Brayshaw (32 disposals, two goals), Adam Cerra (28 disposals) and Caleb Serong (22 disposals) stood up.

“I felt I was in a bit of a zone and I thought all the mids really worked really well together,” Mundy said.

“I felt like whenever one of us won the ball or got into a bit of trouble or under pressure, there was someone else there to alleviate that pressure.

“As a unit, I thought we worked really well.”

While Mundy was quick to praise his teammates, Longmuir felt that Mundy was the driving force behind Freo’s dominance, winning the clearances 29-21.

“He just adds so much calmness to the group, we’re pretty young through there, especially today,” Longmuir said.

“He’s like having a coach on the field, he obviously dominated with the ball and won his fair share and finished it really well.

“He’s been doing it since I’ve been here, literally as a player.

He’s a marvel. He’s put in so much hard work, not only this pre-season but through his whole career to get better and better every year and today’s performance was outstanding.

With Freo short on available key forwards to support Matt Taberner, Mundy was pleased with what Lloyd Meek and Sean Darcy achieved as they rotated through the forward line.

The game was Meek’s second at AFL level and his first win in his fourth year at Fremantle.

“(Playing Meek and Darcy) certainly worked today, especially when we’re craving a target up forward and Sean and Lloyd really attacked the ball in the air and were quite efficient at that. It’s certainly working,” Mundy said.

“It was great (to see Meek sing the team song), his parents flew over as well for this game.

“It’s fantastic to see that family support that he’s got and to celebrate the success for Lloyd.

“He’s come in and played two really good games to start his career and he’s got plenty more.”
