Young Fremantle forward Josh Treacy did not travel with the team to Queensland so he could build his form in the WAFL, according to assistant coach Josh Carr.

The 18-year-old kicked five goals in his first official WAFL league game for Peel on Sunday against West Coast, backing up his seven-goal effort in a pre-season game against Claremont in March.

In between those Peel appearances, Treacy has played three AFL games without a goal and Carr said the Club decided to leave the 194cm forward in WA so he could continue to push for selection.

It means Treacy will line up against Perth on Saturday at Lathlain Park.

Carr said the door remains open for Treacy to join the travelling squad and play in round nine against Essendon at Marvel Stadium.

“There’s a few players that we thought really need to play football and (Josh is) one of them,” Carr told SEN WA.

“He’s still a chance to come in for the following week, we can fly him to Melbourne if he has a good game and we need to pick him.

“We just thought it was really important for him to get the continuity to play another game.

“He had a really good game for Peel last week and it would be nice to string another one together.”

Carr reiterated that Fremantle were unlikely to select Luke Ryan against Brisbane unless the star defender showed a rapid recovery from a calf injury at training on Thursday.

Ryan told 6PR earlier on Thursday that despite the narrow chances of selection, he was still doing what he could to play.

“Hopefully, over the next couple of days (the calf) should settle down pretty nicely and, hopefully, put my hand up for selection,” Ryan told 6PR.

Despite Brisbane going into the game with a strong tall forward line in Joe Daniher, Eric Hipwood and Dan McStay, Carr said Fremantle were reluctant to take a risk with Ryan.

“At this stage, he’s most likely not going to get up. At the same time, we do have the main training session and we’ll just see how he goes. It’s more to get through warm-up and see what happens from there and we’ll assess it,” Carr said.

“Brisbane are (going to be a challenge) and Luke would be nice to bring into the team. At the same time, we’re not going to get blinded by that.

“If he is any risk at all, we’re not going to risk him to cost ourselves an extra three or four weeks.”
