Fremantle Senior Coach Justin Longmuir has touched on what Shai Bolton, Michael Walters and Nat Fyfe need to do to do at Wednesday’s main training session to prove themselves available for Thursday’s team selection.

Speaking at his first official in-season media conference on Wednesday morning, Longmuir said forward Shai Bolton would need to pass through the main training session and pull up well to be in consideration.

“We’ve got about 25-28 (players) in the mix,” Longmuir said.

“I think he’s (Bolton) feeling pretty good, so he’ll get out there and see how it is (his leg).

“Like we’ve always said, we won’t take any risks with him, but it’s on the minor end of the injury, so we’ll see what he can handle today and how he pulls up.”

“He’s got a low-end stress response in his leg, so it probably sounds worse than it actually is. If he doesn’t get up this week, we’re pretty confident he’ll be alright next week.”

Longmuir also confirmed that veteran forward Michael Walters had shown to be in good touch following his performances for the Indigenous All Stars and for the Club in the AAMI Community Series clash with Melbourne, but again would be assessed on his fitness following main training.

“His form is proven, we’ll just see how he goes today,” Longmuir said.

“He won’t do as much as Shai (Bolton), but he needs to be able to do something to put his hand up (for selection).”

Longmuir also reiterated dual Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe had been ruled out of the Club’s Round 1 meeting with the Cats, and that the Club would not rush putting a set timeline on his return.

“We need to get footy load into him (Fyfe),” Longmuir said.

“He’s still not up to full training and backing up training sessions, so there is a bit of work to do there.

“We’ll just take our time with him and make sure we get him right before we throw him out there.

“We haven’t really settled on a timeframe so to speak, his body and own confidence in his game will dictate that.”

When asked if the 33-year-old would play in Peel Thunder’s pre-season WAFL match against Perth on Saturday, Longmuir said it would depend on Fyfe’s main training session.

“We’ll work that out (whether he plays), he didn’t train fully on Saturday, so we’ll get him up and going,” Longmuir said.

“If he does a full session today and pulls up well, playing for Peel is the likely next step.”

Fremantle’s final team selection for the Round 1 season opener against Geelong will be released on Fremantlefc.com.au on Thursday at 3.20pm WST.
