Hayden Young has lifted the lid on what it was like to be in the Fremantle coaches’ box in the final moments of the Club’s win over the Gold Coast Suns in Round 12.
Describing the atmosphere as ‘tense’ Young highlighted two key efforts in particular that got senior coach Justin Longmuir on his feet.
Andrew Brayshaw’s head over the ball free kick and Shai Bolton’s match-winning tackle that resulted in a Jye Amiss goal stood out, not only for fans and supporters, but for the entire coaches’ box.
“They were massive (the moments), I was in the coaches’ box and it was pretty tense up there in those last few minutes,” Young revealed on 96FM.
“We knew they were coming but Andy just stood up in the big moment and I suppose in that passage of play, it felt like we had the ball in our forward half but we were struggling to get numbers to the contest.
“I think one thing that Andy does really well is he’s a really hard worker and his work-rate is elite and he was able to get across and help win a really critical contest for us.
“Bolts was just an unreal effort, I mean no one thought he was going to get there and he just mowed him down and essentially won the game for us.”
While there was elation after the final siren, Young described the ‘heart-dropping’ moment Luke Jackson kicked the ball across goals late in the game – an area of the ground Longmuir later affirmed Fremantle definitely do not want to kick the ball.
“It was pretty funny when ‘Dogga’ (Jackson) kicked that ball across the goal, everyone in the coaches’ box, their hearts dropped, and we thought ‘oh no what is that kick,’ and then Bolts just made a massive play,” Young said.
“I think there were moments like that throughout the whole day really where we just had people stand up in big moments and make a play and it was really pleasing we were able to do that away from home and without the home crowd behind us – we were able to bring our own energy.”
As Bolton laid the tackle, and Amiss slotted the match-winning goal, there was an outpouring of emotion in the coaches’ box from Longmuir, slamming his fist into the desk behind him in celebration – a moment Young said showed just how much the win meant.

“He (Longmuir) was pretty happy on the weekend to be honest, I thought we played a pretty good brand of footy,” Young said.
“Most of the time in the box it was pretty positive and there were a few things we weren’t getting done at stoppage that was frustrating a few of us in the box – but he was pretty up and about.
“I think when he knew they were coming, you could probably see he was pretty tense because he was on his feet…I think it was just a massive relief when we got that goal and iced the game.
“It just shows how much it means to everyone involved in the footy Club.”
Finally, Young joked about controlling his own emotions after trying his best to keep a lid on the celebrations.
“I did (yell a bit), I’d been trying to keep quiet all day because it’s not my job in there to be causing disruptions, but that was the moment I was able to let go a little bit.”
