Fremantle forward Murphy Reid has revealed how Senior Coach Justin Longmuir was the driving force behind helping the 18-year-old develop a set-shot routine - one that has seen Reid kick seven straight goals without a miss.

Speaking on SEN WA with Scott Cummings and Tim Gossage on Wednesday morning, Reid said that before joining Fremantle, he never had a goal-kicking routine in place.

“Early days I was kicking like 1.1, 1.2, so I couldn’t get the kicking boots on,” Reid said.

“Then I got the run-up and routine down pat.

“Coming into the Club, I didn’t really need one. Last year I didn’t have too many set shots playing as a midfielder, so I didn’t really think about it.

“Coming straight in as a forward this year, you have a fair few set shots - and I had a bit of the yips for a while. I think I had eight points in a row from set shots.

"All my goals were being kicked on the run or in general play.

“JL (Longmuir) pulled me aside and gave me a nice little routine, and since then I’ve been going well.

“It’s very important to get a routine down.”

Reid has played every game for Fremantle in his debut year at the Club after being drafted with pick 17 in the National Draft - something the 18-year-old didn’t expect to happen so quickly.

“When I got drafted, straight away I had the goal of getting in and getting the best out of myself right away," Reid said.

“I obviously wanted to play straight away and play every game, but I probably didn’t expect to.

“There’s a lot of change coming into an AFL Club, and I thought it might take a little bit of time.

“I’ve been lucky with everyone and how they’ve taken me in and encouraged me to play my way.”

Reid is one of just 11 players to feature in every game for Fremantle in 2025.

Fremantle will now face Essendon on Thursday night at Optus Stadium in the Club’s second match of a three-game home stretch, with bouncedown at 6:10pm WST.
