Fremantle co-vice-captain Caleb Serong said he has been most impressed by Shai Bolton’s full buy-in to learning his midfield role in the absence of Hayden Young.
Bolton had 32 disposals last week - his most as a Fremantle player - and in Saturday’s win over the Tigers bettered that effort by one, finishing with 33, along with five tackles and four clearances.
Serong though, is loving Bolton’s defensive efforts, with Bolton recording the second-most pressure acts by a Fremantle player in the win.
“He’s been great. I think he's bought in since he's come in," Serong said.
“He’s been first class. He's really buying into learning the role, understanding and doing what's required.
“I think you see the flashy stuff he does and the incredible offensive stuff, but I think what he's really buying into is the defensive side of the game.
“His transitions have gone up a massive level, and some of his tackle pressure is creating so many opportunities for him and others.
“I think that's something that we really value with him coming into the midfield, is not just the offensive stuff, but really, I guess buying into the defensive side of the game, and he's been awesome in that."
In greasy, wet conditions, scoring was hard to come by early, with Fremantle scoring 5.9 (39) to the Tigers’ 5.3 (33) at halftime, but put the foot to the floor in the second half, accelerating to 13.25 (103) score to run out 60-point winners.
“The last two weeks, we've had great first quarters, and I don't think we're too far off it today, I just think the main kind of thing that was letting us down was a bit of ball handling in the wet, and we were probably spending it before we'd earned it a little bit,” Serong said.
“I thought the game was still looking the way we wanted.
“We just weren't able to put on the scoreboard.
“I don't think every week's going to look like it did the last two weeks, but it was nice to kind of put a bit more of a four-quarter performance together tonight and not just rely on one quarter.”
Fremantle converted a 19-1 domination in hitouts to advantage into a 41-26 clearance advantage and 44-15 points scored from stoppages.
Fremantle will now travel to Adelaide to face the Crows in a Good Friday clash in Round 4, before returning to South Australia in Round 5 to take on the Pies during Gather Round.
