Fremantle’s backline has started the 2019 season in impressive form and Adam Cerra is hopeful the group can continue this run as the club prepares for Sunday's clash against Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval.

The young midfielder has played the bulk of his AFL career down back and is excited about what the defence has achieved so far this season.

Fremantle have conceded the second-fewest points and the fewest marks inside 50 so far this season.

The form of the backline has created a selection headache for Fremantle, with versatile defender/midfielder Connor Blakely set to return from injury and Taylin Duman available after a one-game suspension.

“We’ve been quite happy but there’s always areas to improve and we want to be one of the really strong defences in the competition,” Cerra said.

“There are a lot of good defences out there and we’ve got to keep improving to be able to top them.

“Everyone plays their role to the best of their ability and I think that’s best for the team.”

Cerra said that he was happy to continue his development at Fremantle in the back line after arriving at the club as a midfielder.

“This year I’ve been playing across half back every game,” Cerra said.

“During training and throughout pre-season, I’ve been exposed to both midfield and half back roles so I’m still learning my craft in both positions.

“At this stage, it’s Ross Lyon’s decision where I play and I’m happy wherever I am. I’m just trying to learn as much as I can each week.

“If I’m able to play both positions, I feel it benefits me. As long as I just keep developing my craft in both roles, that will be a good thing for me.”
