FREMANTLE coach Mark Harvey has forecast a number of changes to his team for Saturday's crunch game against Carlton at Patersons Stadium, but he is uncertain if his giant weapon, Aaron Sandilands, will play.

Sandilands has played just one game in 11 weeks as he battles a recurring toe injury and Harvey said his star ruckman would be tested at Wednesday night's closed training session.

With Fremantle's finals hopes on the line against the Blues, Harvey indicated earlier this week that he would be willing to roll the dice with Sandilands, but he had softened his stance by Wednesday.

"We thought he was going to be close over the last couple of weeks and he hasn't," Harvey said from Fremantle Oval. "We're not budgeting too much for him playing, but we'll see.

"Nothing's changed, just the extent of this injury and how it keeps dragging on. It's up to Carlton how they plan for that.

"I'm probably less inclined to make comment about it because we've probably said over the last couple of weeks that they (Sandilands and David Mundy) might be playing three weeks ago as an example.

"I think we're dealing with something (turf toe) in AFL that hasn't been around too much."

Clearance specialist Mundy, who completed a running session at Fremantle Oval on Wednesday, appears less likely to play, but Harvey refused to rule him out completely.

Fremantle's reigning club champion hasn't played since sustaining a high ankle sprain against Essendon in round 12.

"He's certainly running now, which is a real positive, but he's just pulling up sore at the moment," Harvey said.

"The thing is, once you overcome the injury, it's then the pressure you put on it at training, and whether it gets sore. That's the stage we're at with him.

"We've got nothing to lose at this stage I wouldn't have thought."

Ruckman Jon Griffin will also face a fitness test on Wednesday night for the hip injury that has sidelined him for two matches, with this week's NAB AFL Rising Star nominee, Zac Clarke, a chance to again lead Fremantle's ruck division.

Harvey said the extra responsibility shouldered by players like Clarke through Fremantle's injury crisis would benefit the club long-term.

"What we've had to do through the course of this year and how we've had to induct players, either into the team or into major jobs for the team, I think that's going to hold us in really good stead," the coach said.

"What I mean by that is (Nathan) Fyfe plays the majority of the year in the midfield because (Anthony) Morabito is not there. Well that's going to do Nathan the world of good.

"We've found out a lot about the team about what it can and can't do under that sort of strain. Ultimately every club will go through it and it just happens to be our team."

Fremantle will be without suspended utility Adam McPhee this week, and Harvey said he was looking at making more than one change with an eye on Carlton's small forward line.

Ryan Crowley, who was dropped for last Friday night's loss to St Kilda, is also an option to return and run with Brownlow Medal favourite Chris Judd.

"They've got some small quick forwards. I think we'll make a number of changes," Harvey said.

"We might go taller. Perhaps we might set (Alex) Silvagni a challenge on a small forward. He's got good speed.

"It's whether (Jarrad) Waite and (Michael) Jamison... are fit enough to play this week.

"We'll have a look at those areas and see whether we get the right match-ups."
