In the lead up to our Mother's Day Match this Sunday against Port Adelaide, fremantlefc.com.au is profiling a selection of players and their mums.
First up is young gun Chris Mayne and his mum Leanne:
When did you first realise Chris was going to be a star?
A Monstar! Straight away, as he was a cheeky little thing. Chris has always been sport oriented from the moment he picked up his first bat and ball. He has this quality about him which I find fascinating, and this huge drive and hunger to always succeed.
As a junior it was evident in how he played his football and cricket. I think I've always known that he would achieve some sort of success. I can still remember that burst of pride as he ran onto Subiaco Oval for his very first game of AFL.
What's the hardest thing about watching him play footy?
To be honest, watching him line up for a goal. I silently pray it will go through, and of course I don't want to see him get injured. Some of the head high tackles make me cringe.
What's the nicest thing Chris has done for you?
For my birthday one year (I won't say which, but significant) he paid for a night at the Burswood. It included dinner and a selection of wines, the room had been decorated with balloons and a Happy Birthday banner across the wall. I was very surprised as it was a very special thing for him to do.
What do you think is Chris' greatest quality?
His compassion and willingness to help children less fortunate than him. He really enjoys being an ambassador for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. He's also very funny and generous and would do anything for his friends and family.
Can you tell us any hidden talents he has?
I don't know about any hidden talents, but I am amazed at how tidy he is now that he owns his own home. Also, his cooking is improving all the time... still not Masterchef level yet though!
Mayne’s thoughts on his mum:
What is the best thing about your mum?
Her caring nature.
What do you miss most about living with your mum?
Her cooking.
If your talent is footy - what’s your mums?
Naming movies - she’s a movie buff. She can recite all the lines from Grease.
When you go to mums for dinner - what do you always hope she has cooked for you?
Old school chicken schnitzel with roast potatoes, veges and gravy, or a mean lasagna
What is the best gift you’ve ever given your mum?
The best gifts are from the heart. On Mothers Day I always do the dishes and buy mum a bunch of flowers.
