Freo young gun Caleb Serong has praised teammate Andrew Brayshaw for his leadership both in Fremantle’s win against Richmond and in the lead up to the game.

Freo went into the clash after losing captain Nat Fyfe and leaders Michael Walters and Alex Pearce to injury the week prior against Sydney.

It meant Brayshaw and acting captain David Mundy were the only leaders on the ground against the Tigers.

Serong said he was impressed with how Brayshaw handled the responsibility, both in his performance with 39 disposals, and in his interactions with players.

“It was unbelievable. We have a lot of leaders out at the moment and a lot of the responsibility fell on a few of the young boys and Andy was one of them,” Serong told SportFM.

“He stood up and took a lot of responsibility on himself. He's part of the leadership group already but I think he took a step forward in terms of his leadership.

“He led by example and drove the energy during the week which led to the outcome of the weekend.”

As well as his 39 disposals, Brayshaw’s 12 tackles, five rebound 50s, eight clearances, 576.5 metres gained, 156 AFL Fantasy points and 10 score involvements were career-highs.

Serong said Brayshaw was becoming a star of the game.

“In terms of how he played, it was the way he was able to will himself in the contest,” Serong said.

“That's where (his game style) starts from, the contest, break tackles and feed the ball out. That's the foundations of his game.

“That's where he had such a big impact on our team and the way he played that last quarter and especially the last couple of minutes with two clearances and the big chase down tackle on the wing.

“He was inspiring, he's just gone from strength to strength.”
