Fremantle midfielder Ann McMahon and forward Aine Tighe have made promising returns to football in Tuesday night’s pre-season practice match with West Coast at Victor George Kailis Oval.

It’s another step forward for the pair as they eye off their Fremantle debuts in the 2022 NAB AFLW season.

After spending the past two years recovering from a serious workplace incident while on duty as a police officer, McMahon showed her determination and hunger on the field to finish among Freo’s best for the match.

Meanwhile, Tighe has spent her first two seasons with the Club on the sidelines following an anterior cruciate ligament tear at the start of 2020, before a medial tear in the same knee saw the Irish recruit sit out for the entirety of 2021.

Senior coach Trent Cooper said it was a proud feeling to see McMahon and Tighe back in Fremantle colours.

“I thought Ann played a really solid game today. She was always competitive and always leading up at the ball from her role on the forward line,” Cooper said.

“It was also great to see Aine get out there and get through a game, so that was probably the most pleasing aspect of the whole day for us.”

The practice match also gave an opportunity for Fremantle’s draft crop to show their talents, including the likes of Amy Franklin and Dana East who are pushing to make their own debuts in 2022.

“I thought Dana East was outstanding all day with her effort, and her commitment to the contest was really good, whether it was forward or as an inside mid,” Cooper says.

“Amy was beaten in her first contest down back and after that she did a really good job. Up forward she was lively as well, so I was pleased to see her go about her business.”

It was the final official hit out for Fremantle before kicking off the 2022 season against Adelaide at Fremantle Oval on Sunday 8 January.
