Josh Treacy at training on Wednesday.

Key Fremantle forward Josh Treacy has sustained a high-grade lateral ligament injury in his left ankle while playing for Peel at the weekend.

Treacy sustained the ankle injury just two minutes into the first quarter of Peel Thunder’s clash with East Perth on Saturday, after landing awkwardly in a marking contest.

Executive General Manager of Football Peter Bell said the 19-year-old had appeared to have avoided any syndesmosis damage.

“It happened really early in the game, unfortunately for Josh,” Bell said.

“He sustained a high-grade lateral ligament injury in his ankle and also some bone bruising.

“There is a lot of swelling there which is making it a little bit harder to diagnose as well, but that’s what we think the damage is.

“He will be slow going for, hopefully, a few days and then we are hoping he might be available in a couple of weeks.”

Forward line pair Matt Taberner and Joel Western made their football returns at the weekend for Peel, with both players impressing up forward.

Taberner returned from a back injury to kick three goals, while Western kicked a game-high four goals after returning from a hamstring injury.

“Both players performed well, and we were really pleased with how they recovered,” Bell said.

“They got a few bumps and bruises but overall, it was pleasing to see how they both performed.”

Meanwhile, Bell provided an update on the progress of winger Nathan O’Driscoll, who has missed the past five matches after being sidelined with a foot injury.

“Nathan has got a scan this week, the last time he had the scan we just needed to see a little more healing,” Bell said.

“We are confident that will be the case this time, and then he can progress to on-field training.”
