Senior Coach Lisa Webb spoke following Fremantle’s 70-point loss to a dominant Brisbane Lions on Saturday afternoon and said the home side were ‘outworked’.
“They were clearly really dominant – we just couldn’t slow them down,” Webb said on the Lions.
“They just outworked us all day and (it’s) obviously disappointing.”
Webb touched on what the side couldn’t get right, and said Brisbane’s dominance took over.
“I thought we were second to the ball, their speed really caught us especially in transition – they scored far too easily, so we’re going to have to look at that,” Webb said.
“We couldn’t get easy exits. Our contest work one-on-one, especially aerially, we were getting beaten. At times we just needed to bring the ball to ground and mark it ourselves.”
Despite the result, Webb said the belief of the group remains high, and that these challenges are what the side is hungry for.
“The girls are clearly disappointed, but we’ve got to bounce back – we’ll find ways, we always do,” Webb said.
“We’ve been saying we really want this challenge, we want to be up against the best.
“We’ve got a lot of belief in this group, this group are terrific, they’ll fight – I know that, we’ll find ways and we’ll do it together, so I’m looking forward to that challenge.
“Come Monday, we’re ready to regroup and attack North Melbourne.”
Ruck Mim Strom spoke post-match and praised the work rate of the midfielder Aish McCarthy, who booted a goal and led the game with 28 disposals and seven clearances.
“You can see with the clearance numbers, she’s such an in-and-under player and I think that complements our group really well,” Strom said on midfielder Aish McCarthy.
“We’re so lucky to have Aish and she’ll fly again next week.”
Strom also gave Dana East credit for her pressure work, where an inside 50 tackle led to a major score.
“Easty was elite, I think she had two inside 50 tackles that converted to shots on goal, so that was incredible,” Strom said.
Fremantle will host reigning Premiers North Melbourne next Sunday 31 August at Fremantle Oval and Strom encouraged the purple army to get behind the side.
“It will be good to have an eight-day break now, stay at home, and have North come over here will be good,” Strom said.
“Hopefully the Purple Army can get out again – it was great to see so many people here. We really appreciate our fans for showing up and hopefully we can make them proud next week.”
The first week of Indigenous Rounds will commence next week, and Fremantle's AFLW side will become Walyalup during this period.
