Fremantle co-vice-captain Caleb Serong said his seven-year extension until 2034 wasn’t just a football decision, it was a family one.
From the moment Serong arrived in Perth as a young Victorian closely followed by now wife Chloe, the couple, along with Caleb’s parents and brothers have been wrapped into the fabric of the Freo family.
That genuine sense of connection, belonging and care, felt as strongly in the stands and inside the Club as it is at home, sits as a core reason as to why the Serongs have committed their future to life in purple.
“If we didn't feel that connection, that value and that belonging to a place, it's really hard to see how you can commit long term to somewhere that you don't feel that pull to and we've felt that for a long time,” Serong told fremantlefc.com.au during his contract announcement on Tuesday.
“When I first moved over, families a word, but the way that this Club acts from the top down, from Garlo (CEO Simon Garlick) to Joey (EGM of Football Joe Brierty) and to JL (senior coach Justin Longmuir) and all the players, it is you are treated as part of the family, and the fans are a big part of that as well.”
Serong wasn’t due to come out of contract until the end of 2027, but didn’t hesitate to recommit long-term to Fremantle due to how he, his wife Chloe, and his family were treated from the moment they stepped through the door.
“It's not just me, it's my family, my mum and dad, my two brothers, and the way they're made to be made feel part of it,” Serong said.
“And then Chloe, when she moved over she was 19, had no connections over here… not just the partners of the players, the way that they made her feel, but also the players, the staff, they go above and beyond to make the partners of players and the families feel a part of it.
“That's something that I guess goes unrecognised a little bit.
“They (family and partners) have to deal with a lot.
“They deal with our stuff a lot as players. They see our worst. They see our best.
“We're away every two weeks for a couple of nights, and so to have them feel a part of the whole journey is really special, and a big part of the reason why I signed.”
Serong’s signature adds to a core of Fremantle’s youth who have committed to the Club long-term over the past few years.
“It’s very exciting. That’s one of the parts that gets me going in the morning,” Serong said.
“The passion and excitement that those guys and such a big group of our cohort have for this football club,” he said.
“You don’t commit that long to a footy club if you don’t have an emotional and strong investment. That’s what I feel the most. I feel an emotional strong love for this footy Club.
Hayden Young is signed until 2033, while fellow co-vice-captain Andrew Brayshaw put pen to paper until 2031.
