Joel Hamling was pleased with how Fremantle’s defenders stood up to Sydney's early pressure in Freo’s one-point win on Saturday night at Optus Stadium.

The Swans piled on 16 inside 50s to Freo’s five in the opening term, with Freo’s defenders helping to limit the deficit to only three points at the first break.

Hamling was instrumental in the opening term, leading Freo with seven disposals at the time, while Luke Ryan laid five tackles and Ethan Hughes had four rebound 50s.

The 26-year-old was close to best on ground on the night, with 17 disposals, seven marks – including four contested marks - and five spoils.

“It was a really solid game, the whole four quarters,” Hamling said.

“I think the first quarter they had 16 inside 50s to five, so we had our work cut out for us, but as a backline, I thought we did our role tonight really well.”

Hamling was also pleased with the efforts of Freo‘s midfield, who won the clearances 46-22 despite captain Nat Fyfe missing the game due to an elbow infection.

Andrew Brayshaw had one of his best games for the club, finishing with 20 disposals, eight tackles, five marks and five inside 50s.

“Losing such a great player (Nat Fyfe) isn’t ideal but it gives the opportunity to the younger guys,” Hamling said.

“Andrew Brayshaw really starred and I thought Reece Conca was good in there as well. David Mundy was his usual self with 11 clearances.

“It’s really great for Andy, he’s a second-year player and he’s really standing up.

“He’s doing really well for a second year player. He was really vital in that fourth quarter.”

Hamling said he was looking forward to next Sunday’s matchup against his former team the Western Bulldogs.

“They’re an exciting team aren’t they, especially at Marvel Stadium,” Hamling said.

“It will be a tough game and we have eight days break, so next Sunday we’ll reload and go again against the Bulldogs”
