Ange Stannett has been re-elected by her peers as Fremantle captain for a third AFLW season. Gabby Newton steps into the vice-captain role, while defender Emma O’Driscoll has been elevated to deputy vice-captain.

The dynamic trio will be well supported by experienced former skipper Hayley Miller and three new faces in the leadership group for 2026; Meg Kauffman, Jess Low and Mim Strom.

Strom joins the group following another strong season in 2025 where her on-field leadership proved invaluable. The 24-year old ruck is a two-time All Australian and, after seven seasons with Fremantle, is hoping to share her experience with the squad.

“I was probably a bit shocked but very happy. I‘ve been around a while since being drafted (in 2019) and I was so happy to get drafted by this Club. So to be in the leadership group and to try and give back to the Club means alot to me.”

Mim Strom

Strom, who has made 74 AFLW appearances and currently sits fourth for Fremantle games played, gave credit to past leaders.

“I’ve been so blessed to have so many incredible leaders at the Club, particularly the ones already in the leadership group like Ange and Hayley, but particularly Áine. I try and emulate everything she does, she’s one of my favourite people. She’s always pushed me to go outside my comfort zone and has always been encouraging me to go for the leadership vote.”

Strom is keen to lead the emerging group of youngsters at Fremantle with purpose, even if she might need a little help with youngster sister, Indi.

“She’s probably the one that won’t listen to me! I might have to get the other leaders to do that, but we’ve got such an incredibly talented young group and they’re all already leaders in their own right. If I can help get them holding good standards like the leaders I had when I first came to the Club, then I think we’re going to be in a really good spot.”

Joining Strom in the extended leadership group for the first time is Kauffman, who enters her fifth season at Fremantle. The midfielder will continue to embrace the high standard of leadership on and off field, by leading by example.

“I’m very actions-orientated and I’ve never been one to shy away from setting really high standards for myself, but really just trying to encourage others to get those standards as well.

Meg Kauffman

“It’s really special (being selected in the leadership group), grateful is the word that comes to mind. Very grateful to feel trusted by the Club and players to fill this role. I’m also just really excited for the group and to work alongside the other girls, especially Jess and Mim. It’s so cool seeing their growth too.”

Low rounds out the fresh faces. The defender, known for her humble nature and aggression toward the contest, is also the team’s ALFPA representative. A qualified paralegal, Low brings a background in risk management.

“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be given the chance to represent the players and the Club. I was a little bit surprised (to be selected) but really excited to get to work with such a good group of leaders who have been there already, and a few new ones this year.”

Jess Low and Hayley Miller

An unashamed lifelong Fremantle fan, Low is looking forward to bringing her own qualities to role.

“Undying love for the Club I think is the first! I come from a family of Freo supporters and I’m a real diehard who has been with the Club since they entered the competition - but then my personal focus is probably more off-field. I’m really passionate about getting players set up off-field to feel really well supported by the Club, so they can perform on-field”

Experienced pair Ash Brazill and Áine Tighe will continue to provide leadership after stepping away from official duties in 2026.
