Freo took positives out of their 38-point loss to Richmond on Saturday night, but conceded that their ball use continues to let them down in crucial periods, according to Ethan Hughes.

“Our third quarter was a real positive for us this week,” Hughes said.

“Last week we were lacking in that regard so to come out after halftime and put in a good effort was pleasing.

“But there were some disappointing periods of ball use along halfback which let us down.”

Hughes said regardless of opponent, Freo couldn’t afford to have momentary lapses of quality against AFL level competition.

“All the teams in the AFL are quality sides who want to win,” he said.

“For us to go out each week and try to match them, if we’re not playing our best football it makes our job a lot harder.”

Talking points after Richmond loss

Hughes’ performance in defence was a positive for Freo in an otherwise disappointing result on Saturday night.

The athletic defender had 17 touches and operated above 90 per cent disposal efficiency against Richmond on Saturday night, and said he embraced the challenge of facing a tall Tigers forward line.

“It’s a learning experience for me being able to play on both talls and smalls,” he said.

“We all had to stand up a bit tonight and play a bigger role, but it’s something I feel like I’m growing into.

“Learning the game of AFL is such a step up from the WAFL level.

“I’m continuing to grow, develop and make sure I’m putting in the hard work during the week so I can make it an easier transition on game day.”
