Fremantle midfielder David Mundy didn’t rule out a charge at Fremantle’s all times games record in an interview with fellow Freo great Matthew Pavlich on Channel 9 news on Wednesday night.

Pavlich (353) and Mundy (324) lead Freo for games played and Mundy said he was still considering a 17th AFL season.

While Freo’s young midfielders Andrew Brayshaw, Adam Cerra and Caleb Serong have stolen much of the spotlight this season, Mundy has quietly continued to play at his best at 35 while providing valuable experience and leadership to the young group.

“It’s obviously a huge decision (to play on) and one we’re not taking lightly,” Mundy said.

“I’m constantly talking to Peter Bell, our GM of footy, and (senior coach) Justin Longmuir about how they see me fitting into the group.

“I certainly feel like I’m capable next year. I still feel like I’m contributing each week.

“I’ve certainly still got the mental capacity and desire to be engaged in a professional environment.”

Mundy bantered with Pavlich, saying the six-time Doig Medallist would do anything to protect his record of 353 games.

“(Breaking the record) has crossed my mind Pav, if I did happen to get close I think I’d be avoiding the streets of Swanbourne so you don’t try and run me over. “I think I’d be immediately delisted if I got to 352,” Mundy joked.

Mundy said there was a motivation to keep playing as Freo’s younger Dockers come to the fore.

“There’s a real thirst with all of our young players to drive this team forward,” Mundy said.

“I think they understand they’re the next wave and the mantle of what the Fremantle Football Club could be.”

Mundy said he was especially impressed with Serong.

“I think the Lachie Neale comparisons are very apt,” Mundy said.

“I think they run very similarly as well. When he comes in he has a real purpose about his training and a real dedication to improving himself.

“We haven’t seen anything near his ceiling yet.”
